NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healthcare profession that focuses on treating the root cause of disease and illness through supporting the body’s self-healing capabilities. Naturopathic Doctors are primary health care providers that have received 4 years of post-graduate education and are regulated through the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.

Through listening to patients in depth histories and looking at the interactions amongst different factors such as genetics, environmental and lifestyle factors that can contribute to long-term health issues and chronic disease states. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained to integrate standard laboratory testing with more advanced functional lab testing and findings on physical examination with a broad range of natural therapies. These therapies include, but not limited to, lifestyle counseling, botanical/ nutritional supplementation and traditional Chinese medicine/ acupuncture. Therapies can be use in conjunction with conventional medical treatments.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

BHRT is an safer alternative to synthetic hormone replacement. They are compounded from natural sourcing (yam & soy) creating hormones that are identical in structure to the hormones we make. This allows for better safety profile.

Bio-identical Hormone Therapy is an effective way to manage:

  • menopause: low libido, vaginal dryness, hotflashs
  • perimenopause
  • PMS
  • irregular menstrual cycle
  • fertility concerns
  • osteoporosis
  • urinary incontinence
  • stress and sleep disturbances
  • sexual health and libido
  • fibrocystic breast changes
  • adrenal fatigue

Natural Desiccated Thyroid

NDT is a compounded thyroid prescription that contains both T4 & T3. It is typically sourced from porcine (pig) thyroid glands.

Natural Desiccated Thyroid is an effective way to manage:

  • hypothyroid
  • hashimoto’s

How does NDT differ from synthroid?

Synthroid is a synthetic form of T4, used in conventional medicine to treat hypothyroidism. T4 is converted to T3 at the cellular level. T3 is the active thyroid hormone we need for cellular function, without it we have hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, low mood, weight gain, hair loss, brittle nails, dry skin, brain fog, puffiness etc. While some find benefit in using synthroid, others who have issues converting T4 to T3 won’t see the same benefits and may find benefit using NDT. Dessicated thyroid contains all the thyroid hormones naturally found in the gland T4, T3, and calcitonin. Each individual responds differently and it’s important to discuss with your practitioner of which feels right for you.

Prior to therapy initiation, proper testing of your thyroid function needs to be carried out to ensure the correct levels of dosing is achieved. Monitoring of your thyroid levels will need to be done through routine testing.
