Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healthcare profession that focuses on treating the root cause of disease and illness through supporting the body’s self-healing capabilities. Naturopathic Doctors are primary health care providers that have received 4 years of post-graduate education and are regulated through the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.
Through listening to patients in depth histories and looking at the interactions amongst different factors such as genetics, environmental and lifestyle factors that can contribute to long-term health issues and chronic disease states. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained to integrate standard laboratory testing with more advanced functional lab testing and findings on physical examination with a broad range of natural therapies. These therapies include, but not limited to, lifestyle counselling, botanical/ nutritional supplementation and traditional Chinese medicine/ acupuncture. Therapies can be use in conjunction with conventional medical treatments.
Through a patient centred approach, naturopathic medicine uses a combination of both modern scientific research for natural therapies and traditional forms of healing that are individualized to assist each patient’s health goals.
